Indiana Senate Rejects GOP-Backed Redistricting Plan

Indiana’s GOP-controlled Senate has rejected a proposed redrawn congressional map that would have favored their party, despite pressure from President Trump. The vote, with more Republicans opposing the measure, showcased limits to Trump’s influence in the traditionally conservative state. Cheers erupted in the chamber when the proposal failed 31-19.

Senator Michael Bohacek criticized the proposed redistricting as “bad policy,” citing concerns about the legislative process becoming too transactional. Bohacek, who has a daughter with Down syndrome, publicly announced his opposition to the measure last month and took offense at Trump’s derogatory language towards individuals with disabilities.

The rejection of the proposal faced backlash, with Bohacek and fellow Republican Ed Clere receiving bomb threats. Clere attributed the threats to Trump’s pressure campaign, highlighting a divisive “winner-take-all mentality” within the party. Safety concerns aside, there are potential political repercussions, as conservative groups pledge to fund campaigns against Republicans who opposed the bill.

Former Governor Mitch Daniels commended senators for their principled stance in rejecting the new map, calling it a setback for Trump and Washington groups that supported the proposal. Democrats in the Senate argued against redistricting, emphasizing the need for fair competition based on policy merits rather than manipulation.

The rejected map aimed to give Republicans control of all nine congressional seats in Indiana, erasing two Democrat-held districts by splitting Indianapolis into four districts extending into rural areas. The move would have impacted safe districts held by Representatives André Carson and Frank Mrvan.

Despite Trump’s efforts to push for redistricting across Republican-led states, Indiana’s rejection underscores the complexity and resistance within the party. The Senate vote reflects a broader challenge to Trump’s influence as the midterm elections loom, with ongoing debates on redistricting strategies across the country.
