The European Union’s Ambassador to Canada, Geneviève Tuts, expressed the EU’s intention to enhance its relationship with Canada and bring it to a higher level. Tuts, in an interview with CBC’s Power & Politics, ruled out full membership but emphasized the need for a stronger partnership between Canada and the EU through innovative and creative approaches.
Recent surveys indicate a growing interest in Canada joining the EU among European citizens. While the idea has been mentioned by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and Finnish President Alexander Stubb, the EU membership process requires adherence to the Copenhagen criteria, which includes criteria such as stable democratic institutions, the rule of law, and human rights.
Even though geographical constraints limit Canada’s path to EU membership, Tuts stressed the importance of exploring alternative forms of cooperation. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s recent participation in a summit of European leaders in Armenia, where he highlighted the need for repairing the weakened international rules-based order, has further solidified Canada’s alignment with the EU’s vision.
The relationship between Canada and the EU continues to deepen, with a focus on strengthening cooperation across various sectors like trade, technology, energy, and security. Tuts expressed optimism about progress on the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement in the near future.
