Renowned Rock Climber Will Stanhope Remembered

Condolences have been expressed online for a renowned professional rock climber who tragically lost his life in a fall from the Stawamus Chief. Will Stanhope, as confirmed by his family, passed away on April 23. The incident occurred during a climbing route called Rutabaga on April 13, prompting a response from Squamish Search and Rescue (SAR).

The climber fell approximately 20 meters, sustaining severe injuries on the intermediate 5.11a route located on the Grand Wall of the Stawamus Chief. Squamish SAR, along with other first responders, conducted a ground operation to stabilize the climber in challenging terrain before executing a long-line rescue to a nearby base for further medical attention.

Emergency services responded promptly, providing critical care and transporting the patient to the hospital in serious but stable condition. Will Stanhope, a well-known free solo climber and a member of the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG), was recognized for his extraordinary climbs, including the first free ascent of Mount Combatant’s south ridge in British Columbia.

Stanhope’s passion for climbing and his close-knit community were highlighted by his family, who described him as a courageous and humorous individual with a profound love for nature and adventure. They shared their gratitude to those who shared in his climbing journey and supported him throughout his life. A tribute event is planned to honor Stanhope’s adventurous spirit in Squamish later this season.
