With the upcoming tournament partly hosted in the city, Howarth eagerly anticipates photographing fans from lesser-known countries like Curaçao, Cape Verde, and Uzbekistan. Particularly, he yearns to capture the spectacle of Canadian fans united in support of Team Canada, envisioning a sea of red flags waving in fervent celebration, a moment he has longed to immortalize through his lens.
Among the myriad fan cultures he has encountered, Howarth has developed a fondness for Croatian supporters, admiring their strong community spirit, unwavering passion for soccer, and iconic red and white checkered jerseys. He finds joy in capturing the emotions and camaraderie displayed by fans, highlighting the unpredictability and fervor that smaller nations bring to the World Cup stage.
Describing his favorite types of fan photographs, Howarth identifies the “anguish photo” depicting fans’ raw emotions of disappointment, the “molar shot” capturing intense reactions revealing back teeth, and the chaotic yet authentic “big blur” moment when fans erupt in jubilation following a goal.
