A judge in Utah has sentenced Kouri Richins to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of her husband, Eric Richins. The conviction came after she was found guilty of poisoning her husband’s cocktail with a lethal dose of fentanyl, as well as other felonies including insurance fraud, forgery, and attempted murder by trying to poison him with a fentanyl-laced sandwich.
Judge Richard Mrazik emphasized that Richins posed a significant danger and should never be released. Despite maintaining her innocence and expressing disbelief at the verdict, Richins, dressed in a lime green jail uniform, appealed to her absent sons to not give up on her during the sentencing.
Prosecutors revealed that Richins, a 35-year-old real estate agent in deep financial debt, had multiple undisclosed life insurance policies on her husband, hoping to inherit his estate valued at over $4 million US. Eric Richins’ father advocated for the severe sentence to protect his grandsons from any future harm from their mother.
The case gained attention when Richins was arrested while promoting her children’s book on coping with loss, despite the disturbing revelations during the trial. Letters from her sons were read in court, expressing fear and distrust towards their mother, highlighting instances of threats and neglect they endured.
The trial, initially set for five weeks, ended abruptly with the defense declining to call any witnesses. The jury swiftly reached a guilty verdict after deliberating for under three hours on all charges against Richins.
