“Unpredictable Weather Strikes Saskatchewan’s First Long Weekend”

Saskatchewan is facing unpredictable weather as its first long weekend of camping, golf, and summer activities arrives. A severe spring storm hit the province with winds exceeding 100 kilometers per hour, causing flooding and even flurries. In the northern regions, fresh snow fell on partially frozen lakes, creating a confusing mix of winter and summer conditions. Some areas are dealing with flooding post-ice melt while also enforcing fire bans.

Matthew Siemens, who monitors lake conditions in Saskatchewan, has been inundated with inquiries about boating possibilities. Unfortunately, for most areas in the province, boating is not yet feasible due to ongoing wintry conditions. Residents, like Siemens based near Prince Albert, are experiencing cold, snowy, and windy weather, dampening spirits for outdoor activities.

Officials at Prince Albert National Park are working diligently to prepare Beaver Glen Campground after recent snowstorms buried campsites under half a meter of snow. While the campground is set to open with water services, a boil water advisory is in place. Other campgrounds like Namekus Lake will open with snowy sites and no fish shacks, and Narrows Campground will have only pit toilets available. Sandy Lake Campground, unfortunately, will remain closed for the long weekend.

Authorities are warning against venturing onto the ice, emphasizing its instability and danger. Residents, like Barry Howe near La Ronge, woke up to unexpected snowfall after a brief snow-free period. Despite the challenging weather, preparations are ongoing at various properties like Candle Lake, Emma Lake, and Waskesiu. The golf course at Candle Lake remains closed, with plans to open on May 21, depending on weather conditions.

As locals eagerly await warmer days, officials urge caution and optimism for the upcoming summer season. While the weather may not be ideal this long weekend, residents are encouraged to embrace the changing conditions and be prepared for various activities. Despite the unseasonal weather, the hope remains for a better outlook in the coming weeks.
