Robert Thomas scored both goals for Canada in the final 1:16 of regulation time to force the game into overtime. Despite the effort, Canadian head coach Misha Donskov expressed disappointment in the team’s performance, citing a lack of consistency throughout the game.
Canada, following a 4-2 semifinal loss to Finland, had to settle for the bronze medal match, marking the third consecutive year without a medal at the championship. Goalie Jet Greaves made 21 saves in the final game, finishing the tournament with impressive statistics.
Canadian captain Macklin Celebrini, despite leading the team in scoring, acknowledged Norway’s strong play and the missed opportunities for Canada in the tournament. Canada finished atop Group B in the preliminary round but failed to secure a medal in the end.
In a separate game, Finland clinched their fifth ice hockey world championship title by defeating Switzerland 1-0 in overtime. Konsta Helenius scored the gold-winning goal for Finland, with Justus Annunen delivering a shutout performance in goal.
The victory marked Finland’s first medal since their last title in 2022. Switzerland, despite holding a 5-on-3 advantage, failed to capitalize, allowing Finland to secure the win. Finland’s captain, Aleksander Barkov, who returned from a knee injury, contributed significantly to the team’s success with his impressive performance.
