Ukraine conducted a significant drone attack on Russia, resulting in the death of at least four individuals, with three fatalities occurring near Moscow. Additionally, a dozen people sustained injuries in the strike, which did not cause any damage to Russia’s largest airport. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy affirmed the drone strikes, labeling them as justified responses to previous Russian attacks on Ukraine’s capital and other cities.
In Russia, a woman lost her life when a drone hit her residence in Khimki, a city northwest of Moscow, while two men perished in Pogorelki village, located 10 kilometers north of the capital. Ukrainian drones also caused damage to unspecified infrastructure and several high-rise buildings, as confirmed by local authorities. Furthermore, a man was killed in the Belgorod region after a drone targeted his truck.
Moscow reported that at least 12 individuals were wounded in the nighttime strike, mainly in the vicinity of the city’s oil refinery. Despite the casualties, the refinery’s technology remained unscathed. The Indian Embassy in Moscow disclosed the death of an Indian worker in a drone strike in the Moscow region, with three other Indian nationals hospitalized. Russian defenses intercepted 81 drones en route to Moscow, marking a significant escalation since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Zelenskyy emphasized that the drones had traversed over 500 kilometers from Ukrainian territory, bypassing Russian air defense systems concentrated around the capital. Nigel Gould Davies, a senior fellow at the International Institute for Strategic Studies, noted that Ukraine’s retaliatory strike was likely in response to recent Russian attacks on Kyiv. The attack underscored Ukraine’s ability to strike at a significant scale near the Russian capital, posing a formidable challenge for the Kremlin amidst ongoing tensions.
Russian air defenses thwarted 556 drones over various regions, including the occupied Crimean Peninsula and the Black Sea, with over 1,000 drones neutralized or disrupted within 24 hours. Ukrainian drones also targeted oil facilities in Russia, impacting Moscow’s oil exports and extending the conflict further into Russian territory. Despite uncertainties regarding the economic repercussions, the strikes have heightened concerns among ordinary Russians, highlighting the far-reaching impact of the conflict beyond the front lines.
In a separate incident, Russian drone strikes on Ukraine wounded eight individuals in the Dnipropetrovsk region, causing damage to residential buildings in Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, and Synelkove. The Ukrainian air force reported intercepting 279 out of 287 drones deployed by Russia during the attack.
