Tragedy Turned Triumph: Keenatch’s Unwavering Resolve

Brandi Keenatch expressed her determination not to give up despite the tragedy that befell her. Following a fatal crash caused by Wylie Vermette in Saskatoon, Keenatch’s partner, Natalie Gardipy, lost her life, while Keenatch suffered severe injuries resulting in paralysis from the waist down. Vermette, 25, appeared in Saskatoon Court of King’s Bench, having pleaded guilty to charges of dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm to Keenatch and another passenger.

During the court proceedings, Keenatch tearfully listened as her aunt read aloud the impactful statement she had written, reflecting on the profound loss she endured. The incident occurred on June 11, 2024, at the intersection of Quebec Avenue and 39th Street East, captured by surveillance footage and witness dashcam recordings. Vermette’s reckless driving led to a collision at high speeds, with his truck reaching 128 km/h before braking and 103 km/h upon impact with the SUV.

Investigations revealed that Vermette’s vehicle, assembled from various sources, did not comply with safety regulations, further exacerbated by its faulty components. The court heard emotional testimonies from Gardipy’s family members, highlighting the devastating impact of her untimely death. Marcella Kyplain, Gardipy’s mother, mourned the loss of her vibrant daughter and the void it left in their lives.

Cheyanne Charles, the father of Gardipy’s son, lamented the absence his child will face due to Vermette’s irresponsible actions. Despite Vermette’s clean criminal record, his history of numerous driving violations underscored his dangerous driving behavior. The prosecution and defense jointly recommended a two-year custodial sentence for Vermette, with additional probation and driving restrictions upon release.

Vermette’s lawyer acknowledged the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the tragic consequences of speeding. Justice Daryl Labach postponed the sentencing decision to June 19 to deliberate on the case further. The courtroom saga serves as a stark reminder of the lasting repercussions of reckless driving and the profound impact it has on individuals and families.
