Canada’s Sophia Jensen secured the silver medal in the women’s canoe single 500-meter race during the inaugural Canoe Sprint World Cup event held in Szeged, Hungary. The athlete from Chelsea, Quebec, completed the race in a time of one minute and 59.75 seconds, coming in second to Olympic doubles champion Sun Mengya of China who finished in 1:59.00. Local favorite Csofia Cscorba took the bronze with a time of 2:02.54 in front of the home crowd.
Jensen is part of a group of six Canadian Olympians competing in the World Cup series this season, which includes Katie Vincent, Sloan MacKenzie, Connor Fitzpatrick, Michelle Russell, and Riley Melanson. Joining the national team in 2017, Jensen made her Olympic debut at the Paris Games in 2024. The 24-year-old previously clinched a world championship silver medal in the C-1 500m event during the 2022 competition in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
The Canoe Sprint World Cup season will progress with the next event scheduled for May 14 in Brandenburg, Germany, followed by another stop in Montreal from July 9-12.
