Residents of Sheshatshiu are grieving the loss of Beatrice Penashue, who tragically lost her life this week allegedly at the hands of her partner.
Munik Aster, Penashue’s sister, expressed deep sorrow, stating, “My family and I are devastated. We are completely shattered. It feels like a part of us has been ripped away, and we are filled with anger.”
A memorial walk was held in Sheshatshiu, with over 100 participants paying tribute to Penashue. The procession paused at a shed where the fatal incident occurred, with some attendees displaying a banner calling for the end of substance abuse.
John Joseph Nuna, aged 29, has been arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with the death of Penashue.
Penashue Remembered as a Kind Soul
Aster fondly described her sister as the youngest in their family, known for her gentle nature. “My sister was truly a wonderful person. She adored her children,” Aster shared.
Penashue had spent time in a foster home in Ontario during her youth, leading to a loss of her native language upon returning home. “She was never the same after that,” Aster reflected.
Chief Eugene Hart of the Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation emphasized the community’s need for additional support and resources to address substance abuse issues.
Warrick Milley, who organized the memorial walk, witnessed the harrowing incident and alerted authorities. He stressed the need for justice and highlighted the community’s substance abuse challenges.
Penashue’s demise coincided with the provincial government’s declaration of a gender-based violence epidemic.
The suspect, Nuna, appeared in court via phone and faces charges of second-degree murder and assault. No-contact orders were issued during the proceedings, and Nuna remains in custody pending further legal proceedings.
