A wildfire alert and local state of emergency in the summer village of Sandy Beach have been lifted, following a destructive blaze that consumed several homes on Saturday. Mayor David Noyes reported that the fire, which had spread over two hectares, resulted in the destruction of three houses and partial damage to another.
Emergency management director Brian Brady praised the swift containment efforts that saved one remaining house, commending the quick response of firefighting teams from neighboring areas as mentioned in a social media update from Sturgeon County. The village, situated approximately 65 kilometers northwest of Edmonton, is home to around 278 permanent residents.
Brady described witnessing flames towering above the trees, emphasizing the importance of communication during such emergencies. He encouraged residents to utilize the Alberta Alert app for timely information. Sturgeon County played a vital role in emergency services, with support from nearby Alexander Band firefighters who arrived within minutes to assist.
Efforts to combat the fire continued through the night, with no further structural damages reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Officials highlighted the heightened fire risk due to dry conditions and overgrown yards, especially as summer residents are yet to arrive.
Local resident Tiffany Fortin shared her experience of the chaotic and intense situation, noting the urgency in evacuating animals from her property amidst the rapid spread of the fire. Concerns extend beyond Sandy Beach, with various counties and towns around Edmonton issuing fire advisories or bans due to the increased fire risk.
Sturgeon County and Parkland County are under fire bans, while other areas have implemented restrictions on outdoor fires and burn permits. As windy conditions persist across the province, vigilance is urged. In a separate incident, a fire near Range Road 10 and Beau Rand estates in Parkland County prompted an evacuation alert, urging residents to prepare for potential evacuation.
