“Russia Launches Devastating Attack on Ukraine’s Cities”

Russia launched a significant attack on Ukraine’s major cities, deploying numerous drones and missiles in a nighttime assault that resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals and the destruction of a revered religious site, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and officials on Monday. Kyiv experienced a series of intense explosions, starting with ballistic missiles followed by Shahed drones, prompting many residents to seek refuge underground while authorities advised everyone to take cover. Zelenskyy reported that the strikes resulted in the deaths of 11 civilians and emergency personnel, as well as injuries to 53 individuals across Ukraine.

In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that five people lost their lives, with at least 30 individuals sustaining injuries, including two young children aged five and six, according to Tymur Tkachenko, the head of the city’s military administration. The Shevchenkivskyi district of Kyiv was hit by five strikes on civilian sites within half an hour, including a 25-story residential building, a market, and a grocery store that caught fire. Additionally, a nine-story residential building in the Obolonskyi district was directly hit.

Russia’s Defence Ministry claimed responsibility for targeting military industrial facilities in Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Dnipro using long-range precision weapons and drones. The ministry stated that all designated facilities had been successfully struck. The strikes also allegedly hit Kyiv’s Radar plant, responsible for drone components, and the Mayak plant, which produces Ukraine’s Flamingo long-range cruise missiles. Military conscription offices in Kyiv were also reportedly targeted.

Ukraine’s air force indicated that Russia launched a total of 70 missiles and 611 drones overnight, predominantly focusing on Kyiv while also attacking Dnipro and Kharkiv. The military reported intercepting or electronically disrupting 632 aerial targets, including 50 missiles and 582 drones. Initial data revealed that 20 ballistic missiles and 27 attack drones struck 42 locations throughout the country, with debris from intercepted drones falling at 12 sites.

Significant damage was inflicted on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, a monastic complex, during the assault, resulting in a serious fire, as per Tkachenko, who accused Russia of deliberately targeting “the heart of one of the largest Christian shrines.” The Dormition Cathedral’s roof caught fire during the attack, condemned by Metropolitan Epiphanius, head of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, as a heinous act against humanity, history, and Christianity. The Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, comprising monasteries and churches built between the 11th and 19th centuries, includes underground structures connecting various churches within a labyrinthine cave system spanning over 600 meters.

In Kharkiv, authorities reported that Russian forces employed a “double tap” tactic, launching four additional drone strikes at the site following an initial attack in the Kholodnohirskyi district, resulting in the deaths of four emergency service workers and an employee from the city council’s emergency department. Furthermore, six rescuers, three civilians, and a woman in the Shevchenkivskyi district were injured in drone strikes damaging residential buildings and vehicles. In Dnipro, a local college building was destroyed, while infrastructure, businesses, cultural institutions, and a school suffered damage due to missile strikes. Additionally, Russian forces conducted multiple attacks utilizing drones, artillery, missiles, and guided aerial bombs in various districts.

The Sumy region also experienced casualties, with three individuals, including a child, sustaining injuries following a Russian strike on an apartment building that also damaged a non-residential structure, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service. French officials likened the attack on the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra to a bombing of Notre Dame, emphasizing the need to preserve shared universal heritage and advocate for peace amid the ongoing conflict. Russia’s Defence Ministry alleged that the complex was hit by an expired U.S.-made Patriot air defense missile, although no evidence was provided to support this claim.
