“Rare Otter Pup Rescue in Richmond Suburb”

In homes, encountering unwelcome wildlife visitors like squirrels, skunks, or raccoons is not uncommon. However, a recent incident in Richmond, B.C.’s Steveston neighborhood involved an unusual sighting of otter pups. Alex Ritz, from Skedaddle Humane Wildlife Control, had the unique task of relocating three otter pups, a rare occurrence for his team.

The discovery took place near the Steveston wharf, where otters are occasionally spotted searching for food brought in by fishing boats. The homeowners noticed an otter frequenting their property, carrying nesting materials and disappearing behind a shed. After a wildlife expert confirmed otter activity, Ritz was called in to assess the situation.

Upon inspection, it was determined that the otter pups were alone under the shed. Ritz’s team had to carefully extract the young otters, as the mother had hidden them at the far end of the shed. By digging a trench and installing wildlife-proof steel wire, they ensured the otters couldn’t return.

During the rescue operation, a nest was uncovered, and the three baby otters were safely retrieved and placed in a sheltered box. Later that night, the mother otter returned to retrieve her young. While otters can be messy and emit a strong odor, their presence indicates a healthy environment. It is advised to leave otters undisturbed, especially if they have recently given birth, to avoid any harm to the animals. Properly securing entry points can prevent future wildlife disturbances.
