Prime Minister Mark Carney is gearing up to attend the upcoming G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, France, marking his first gathering with world leaders since the onset of the U.S.-Israeli conflict in Iran. This summit holds significance as it follows the critical minerals action plan adopted at the previous summit, along with discussions on global economic imbalances and international development aid.
Carney’s participation in the G7 is part of a broader European tour, his ninth since taking office. Apart from France, he is also expected to engage with leaders in Ireland during his trip. Key priorities for Canada at the summit include advocating for safeguards in the realm of artificial intelligence, particularly focusing on protecting children’s data privacy.
The summit’s agenda may be overshadowed by the presence of U.S. President Donald Trump amid escalating tensions with Iran, leading to a global energy crisis and economic repercussions for G7 nations. Trump’s stance on AI, social media regulations, and NATO involvement in the Iran conflict is expected to spark discussions and potential clashes with other leaders.
Despite the challenges posed by differing viewpoints, leaders are unlikely to issue a joint communiqué at the summit’s conclusion, opting instead for individual statements on specific issues. The uncertain prospect of a bilateral meeting between Carney and Trump looms in the backdrop, especially following Trump’s recent threats regarding trade agreements.
Additionally, efforts will be made during the summit to secure Trump’s support for a European-led initiative to demine the Strait of Hormuz, a move that Canada has indicated willingness to endorse. Ahead of the summit, Carney is scheduled to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris, where discussions on AI, child safety online, trade, and defense are anticipated.
Carney’s itinerary also includes a visit to Ireland, with a special trip to County Mayo, a place of personal significance for the Prime Minister due to his family ties to the region. The planned meetings with Irish officials aim to strengthen bilateral relations, particularly in sectors like agri-food, digital innovation, AI, and pharmaceuticals. The upcoming interactions are expected to further bolster the longstanding robust ties between Canada and Ireland.
