Edmonton Vet Faces Upheld Penalties for Cat Sedation

Alberta’s top judicial body has confirmed penalties for an Edmonton veterinarian, Dr. Ignacio Tan III, who has a lengthy record of medical malpractice incidents. The Alberta Court of Appeal’s ruling upholds disciplinary actions taken by the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association (ABVMA) against Tan for administering sedation to a cat without proper oversight. The case also involved misleading the owners about the cremation process of the cat’s remains.

The Court of Appeal decision, released on May 25, upheld the sanctions imposed by the ABVMA in May 2024, which found Tan guilty of unprofessional conduct related to a June 2020 incident. Tan performed surgery on a cat at Mercy Animal Hospital in north Edmonton, which resulted in the cat’s unfortunate death two days later. The clinic provided the owners with communal ashes instead of individual cremation, leading to a misleading situation.

Tan faced sanctions for conducting surgery without a designated anesthetist and for administering powerful sedatives without proper assistance, indicating a lack of expertise in veterinary practice. The disciplinary actions included a written reprimand, a 60-day suspension, and mandatory training for Tan.

Tan, currently prohibited from practicing in Alberta, has a history of challenging disciplinary measures by the ABVMA, often escalating his appeals to higher courts. Despite the allegations and sanctions, Tan denies any wrongdoing and intends to appeal the recent court decision.

The series of complaints against Tan have raised concerns about the need for stricter disciplinary measures for veterinarians repeatedly found guilty of misconduct. However, regulatory bodies, including the ABVMA, remain confident in their decisions against Tan, considering his case an anomaly that deviates from typical disciplinary proceedings in the veterinary field.
