“PM Carney Asserts Canada’s Sole Authority on U.S. Relations”

Prime Minister Mark Carney has disregarded Conservative MP Jamil Jivani’s recent visit to Washington D.C., stating that Jivani won’t acquire any new knowledge beyond what Carney already knows. Carney emphasized that the government of Canada is the sole negotiator for the country, regardless of individuals’ visits to Washington.

Jivani’s trip to Washington, accompanied by fellow caucus members, aimed to convey the Conservative party’s “Team Canada message.” This marked his second visit to the U.S. capital this year, following an earlier trip in February focused on enhancing Canada-U.S. trade relations.

During his February trip, Jivani met with U.S. Vice-President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and General Motors officials to advocate for cooperative relations between the two nations. However, Carney previously dismissed the idea of collaborating with Jivani to address trade issues with the U.S., highlighting existing government channels for such discussions.

In a recent statement in Oakville, Carney reiterated that Canada holds the negotiating authority in trade matters, despite the goodwill of U.S. counterparts towards Canadian visitors. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre refrained from commenting extensively on Jivani’s latest trip, emphasizing the party’s consistent efforts toward tariff-free trade in Washington.

Reports revealed that a delegation of Tory MPs, including Shuvaloy Majumdar, Michael Chong, Jacob Mantle, and Corey Tochor, engaged in constructive discussions in Washington to safeguard and expand tariff-free trade between both nations. The Canadian Press disclosed that U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer emphasized an “America First” policy during a meeting in Washington, emphasizing the importance of mutual cooperation in energy and minerals development.

Greer’s remarks indicated a commitment to fostering beneficial partnerships with Canada in these sectors and discouraged leveraging resources during the impending review of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement. The meeting underscored the significance of continued collaboration between the two countries in various critical areas.
