“Conservative MPs Engage With U.S. Trade Officials”

Conservative member of Parliament (MP) Jamil Jivani revisited Washington on Wednesday accompanied by several Tory colleagues to engage in discussions with Canadian business stakeholders and United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Canadian Ambassador Mark Wiseman was also present at the meeting, which was organized by the American Chamber of Commerce in Canada. Greer has recently expressed concerns about Canada’s stance in the ongoing trade talks.

Jivani, who has close ties to Vice-President JD Vance and connections within the Trump administration, had a previous visit to Washington in February for a diplomatic mission. During that visit, Jivani met with Vance and Greer, visited the White House, and briefly conversed with President Donald Trump. He aimed to support Prime Minister Mark Carney’s efforts in negotiating a new trade agreement with the Trump administration.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, when asked about Jivani’s recent meeting and objectives, emphasized the importance of advocating for tariff-free trade in Washington. Poilievre stressed the need for the Canadian government to leverage all available relationships to secure a trade deal with the U.S.

A Tory delegation, including Conservative finance critic Shuvaloy Majumdar, foreign affairs critic Michael Chong, and MPs Jacob Mantle and Corey Tochor, was also in Washington to promote the Conservative party’s “Team Canada” message. The group aimed to engage in constructive discussions to safeguard and enhance tariff-free trade between the two countries.

Meanwhile, Conservative critic for Canada-U.S. trade Shelby Kramp-Neuman planned to visit Washington in the near future. Poilievre had previously criticized Jivani for his comments on the Canadian public’s reaction to the trade war, emphasizing that Jivani’s views were his own and not representative of the party.

Greer’s recent remarks about potential trade enforcement actions against Canada over U.S. alcohol sales in Canadian liquor stores set the backdrop for the discussions during Wednesday’s meeting in Washington.
