Courtney Russell found herself unexpectedly facing emergency surgery at Grande Prairie Regional Hospital (GPRH) and endured a nearly week-long wait for the procedure. Initially admitted for severe pain, Russell was informed by a doctor that her gallbladder needed to be removed the following day. However, the surgery was repeatedly postponed due to concerns over the sterilization of surgical tools, as Russell revealed to CBC News. She eventually underwent the surgery after being airlifted to Hinton, Alberta, a distance of 335 kilometers from Grande Prairie, a move she had been advocating for.
According to Alberta Health Services (AHS), elective surgeries at GPRH were postponed due to equipment issues affecting surgical tool sterilization. AHS emphasized that the decision to delay elective surgeries was made to ensure the hospital could prioritize emergency procedures such as C-sections and cases related to cancer and trauma without any delays. Despite this, Russell’s emergency surgery was postponed multiple times, contrary to her expectations.
AHS, in response to Russell’s case, mentioned that patients not requiring immediate life-saving surgery based on their individual case review might be transferred to another healthcare facility. The health authority acknowledged the challenges patients and their families face when transferred but stated that such decisions were necessary to manage the current situation at GPRH. A comprehensive investigation has been initiated by AHS to assess any potential risks to patients related to the sterilization issues.
While AHS plans to resume elective surgeries and reschedule postponed procedures promptly, surgeries deemed less urgent or life-saving may be redirected to other facilities until the sterilization problems are resolved. Russell, who hails from Sexsmith, Alberta, expressed her distress over the repeated postponements of her gallbladder surgery, which she described as excruciating. Having faced multiple postponements and a breakdown while awaiting her surgery, Russell criticized the prolonged delay in receiving care, highlighting her concerns about others enduring similar situations.
Following her surgery and recovery, Russell voiced her diminished trust in the healthcare system, emphasizing the unacceptable delays she experienced. Despite finally undergoing the necessary procedure, Russell remains deeply disturbed by the prolonged wait for treatment and fears for others in similar predicaments.
