U.S. authorities revealed on Tuesday that the teenagers responsible for the tragic incident at a San Diego mosque had connected on the internet and shared a deep-seated animosity towards various religions and races. According to Mark Remily of the FBI, writings by the suspects have been discovered, although the specific ideologies or beliefs expressed have not been disclosed. As part of the investigation, authorities have seized thirty firearms and a crossbow from two residences linked to the case. Remily stated that efforts are ongoing to determine if the shooters had broader schemes in mind.
Prior to the attack on Monday, law enforcement was urgently trying to locate the two teenagers, guided by a report from one of the mothers who indicated her son’s suicidal tendencies and disappearance, along with missing weapons and her vehicle from their home, shared San Diego police Chief Scott Wahl. The tragic event unfolded two hours after the concerned mother’s call, resulting in a shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego, which also encompasses a school.
The 17 and 18-year-old suspects were later found deceased in a nearby vehicle, having taken their own lives. This incident adds to a series of assaults on places of worship and occurs amidst a surge in threats and hate crimes against Muslim and Jewish communities since the conflict in the Middle East began.
‘Hate rhetoric’ played a role: police
Authorities executed search warrants at the suspects’ residences to piece together the motives behind the attack. While there was no specific threat against the Islamic center, the largest mosque in San Diego, Wahl noted that the suspects engaged in “generalized hate rhetoric.”
Muslim American groups emphasized the escalating anti-Muslim sentiments across the country, with Mohamed Gula, the interim CEO of Emgage Action, highlighting the impact of words on actions.
Victims prevented more bloodshed
Among the deceased was security guard Amin Abdullah, hailed for his role in thwarting the attack. Abdullah’s swift response to the threat, where he fired at the teenagers as they passed by him outside the mosque, initiated a chain of events that prevented further violence. His actions, including alerting the security personnel, contributed significantly to averting additional casualties.
Abdullah, along with two other individuals, sacrificed their lives to protect others from harm during the confrontation with the gunmen. Wahl praised Abdullah’s heroism, emphasizing the critical role he played in safeguarding the mosque’s occupants, particularly the children, from potential harm.
Imam Taha Hassane described the victims as “martyrs and heroes,” underscoring the bravery and sacrifice displayed in the face of danger.
