“Ontario Premier Doug Ford Warns Against Tariffs at U.S. Commencement”

Ontario Premier Doug Ford delivered a commencement address at a U.S. university on Saturday, emphasizing the strong ties between Canadians and Americans and the potential risks associated with tariffs. Clad in a traditional academic gown, Ford spoke to a large audience of graduating students at Saginaw Valley State University’s commencement ceremony in University Center, Michigan, situated approximately 150 kilometers northwest of Detroit.

During his speech, Ford discussed the strained Canada-U.S. relationship and even quoted former President Ronald Reagan, highlighting the negative impact of tariffs on markets, businesses, and employment. He underscored the necessity of collaboration between the two nations to avoid economic consequences.

Drawing from his experience in his family’s printing business and his political journey, Ford emphasized the importance of teamwork, relationships, and loyalty for success. He reflected on the historical cooperation between the U.S. and Canada and encouraged the graduates to embody these values in their endeavors.

Ford’s address followed Ontario’s significant investment in a U.S. anti-tariff ad campaign, which led to a temporary halt in trade talks with Canada by President Donald Trump. Subsequently, trade discussions resumed after meetings between Canadian and U.S. trade officials.

In recognition of his contributions, Ford was conferred an honorary doctorate of humane letters by the university. The university president, George Grant Jr., commended Ford for fostering strong cross-border relations in the Great Lakes region.

Ford explained his presence as the commencement speaker by highlighting his prior experiences living and working in the U.S. He acknowledged his brother’s influence in his political career and credited accessibility and responsiveness to constituents for his political achievements.

Addressing the recent legislative developments in Ontario, Ford mentioned the passage of an omnibus budget bill that included provisions to restrict access to certain documents, citing privacy concerns and specific requests for his cellphone records.

In his closing remarks, Ford expressed concerns about the strained Canada-U.S. relationship due to protectionist measures and trade disputes. He stressed the importance of collaboration and emphasized the interconnectedness of the two economies.

Ford’s speeches at the university underscored the significance of fostering positive relationships and cooperation between nations, urging the graduates to uphold these values as they navigate their future endeavors. Saginaw Valley State University, founded in 1963, hosted the premier for the commencement ceremonies.
