A major television production, set to be the largest ever on Prince Edward Island, is slated to kick off this summer. The province is injecting $5 million, in the form of a rebate, to bring Canadian author Carley Fortune’s popular romance novel, “This Summer Will Be Different,” to life as a 10-episode series that will be filmed in P.E.I. and Toronto.
During the unveiling in Victoria, Robin Neinstein, the director of production management at Netflix Canada, emphasized the significance of filming in P.E.I., stating that the island is an integral character in the story rather than just a backdrop. Neinstein expressed Netflix’s excitement about filming in this unique setting.
The production will create 75 job opportunities, including roles like production assistants, painters, and caterers. Rob Riselli, the executive director of Film P.E.I., highlighted that the project will spotlight the beauty of the island and potentially attract more productions in the future, boosting the local economy.
Premier Rob Lantz hailed the development as a positive step for Prince Edward Island’s arts and culture sector and its economy. He emphasized the opportunity to showcase the island to a global audience through the filming of a story intricately tied to P.E.I.
Jenn Redmond, P.E.I.’s minister of economic development, viewed the filming of “This Summer Will Be Different” in the province as a strategic investment in its arts and culture industry, elevating its presence on the world stage within the film industry.
Despite prior concerns raised by the Opposition, Premier Lantz assured that the production is moving forward without a doubt. He expressed eagerness to delve into the novel himself and teased the anticipation of when Netflix’s vast audience will get to witness P.E.I.’s charm on screen.
The exact release date for the series on Netflix is yet to be announced, leaving viewers in anticipation of the island’s debut on the popular streaming platform.
