A man from southern Alberta is facing criminal charges following the discovery of over 500,000 child sexual exploitation images and videos in his possession. The 35-year-old individual was apprehended by the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams’ (ALERT) Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) unit after a search of his residence in Okotoks on May 26, during which multiple hard drives and computers were seized.
The cache of child sexual exploitation materials found is described as one of the largest collections encountered by the unit, according to a statement from ALERT. Over the past year, ICE has identified a total of 622,150 images and videos related to child sexual exploitation through its investigations across the province.
ICE Staff Sgt. Gordon MacDonald emphasized the distressing reality behind each of the recovered images and videos, stressing that every piece represents a real child being exploited for sexual purposes. He highlighted the likelihood that such a vast collection would have been used for trading purposes, further perpetuating the demand for such materials.
The accused individual has been charged with the possession and access of child sexual abuse materials. The investigation was initiated in January 2026 following information shared by the RCMP’s National Child Exploitation Crime Centre regarding the suspect’s uploading activities related to child sexual exploitation materials.
Assistance in the investigation was provided by the Okotoks RCMP. Luna CEO Karen Orser, who leads an Alberta organization supporting young victims of sexual exploitation and their families, underscored the widespread nature of the issue. Orser stressed the importance of preventative measures such as awareness, education, open communication, and a collective effort to safeguard young individuals.
The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court on August 8 in Okotoks.
