International medical group Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) has condemned the recent drone strike in southern Lebanon that resulted in the deaths of two paramedics and the injury of another. The strike, which targeted a rescue team from the Lebanese Civil Defence responding to an earlier attack, has raised concerns about the safety of rescue workers in the region.
MSF expressed outrage over the incident, emphasizing that attacks on healthcare workers are unacceptable and should not become normalized. The paramedics killed in the strike were identified as Hussein Jaber and Ahmad Noura, with a funeral procession held in their honor in Sidon.
The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) stated that the strike targeted a “terrorist” in the area of Mayfadoun, south of Nabatieh, and acknowledged reports of injuries to uninvolved individuals. Despite the IDF’s assertion that the strike was aimed at a specific target, MSF highlighted the risks faced by rescue teams operating in conflict zones.
According to MSF, healthcare workers in southern Lebanon have been significantly impacted by the ongoing hostilities, with numerous attacks on medical facilities and personnel. The organization noted that rescue operations have been hampered due to the fear of further strikes, leading to delays in providing crucial medical assistance to those in need.
The World Health Organization (WHO) documented a total of 161 attacks on healthcare facilities and workers between March and May, underscoring the challenges faced by medical teams in the region. With tensions persisting between Israel and Lebanon, the situation remains volatile, with ongoing concerns about civilian casualties and the effectiveness of ceasefire agreements.
As the conflict continues to unfold, the safety and security of healthcare workers and emergency responders remain a critical issue, requiring sustained international attention and efforts to protect those on the front lines of humanitarian aid in conflict zones.
