Lawsuit Alleges Negligence in Tragic Teen Death

A recent legal case in St. John’s alleges that a young man, central to the Tony Humby and Bruce Escott sexual violence cases, tragically passed away due to negligence by the police, the Newfoundland and Labrador government, and a group home. The lawsuit claims that the young man, who remains anonymous due to legal restrictions, suffered a fatal drug overdose after providing testimony against Humby last year, leading to irreversible brain damage. His family had to make the difficult decision to remove him from life support.

According to the lawsuit, the young man had disclosed abuse by Humby before losing consciousness. Humby is facing trial for 71 charges involving 10 accusers, maintaining his innocence. Meanwhile, Escott has already admitted guilt in abusing seven youths, including the victim in question, receiving a 13-year prison sentence in 2025. The lawsuit contends that Humby and Escott collaborated in exploiting vulnerable teens, luring them with money, drugs, and alcohol at their residences in St. John’s.

The legal action was initiated by lawyer Stephen Barnes of Buckingham Law on behalf of the family. The lawsuit highlights alleged negligence by the police and child welfare authorities. It references instances where the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary was apprised of abuse claims against Humby dating back to 2007 but failed to act decisively. The lawsuit asserts that child protective services neglected to investigate reports about Humby and Escott in 2009, leading to further abuse incidents in subsequent years.

Moreover, the lawsuit accuses the RNC of inadequately addressing multiple complaints against Humby over the years, including sexual assault allegations involving young male victims. The family’s legal team argues that had the authorities fulfilled their obligations starting from 2007, the exploitation network could have been dismantled before the victimization of the young man occurred.

During the trial, the victim and his mother testified about the abuse he endured and the lack of adequate response from the group home where he resided. The mother expressed frustration with the group home workers for not taking appropriate actions despite being informed of the situation multiple times. The lawsuit claims that the group home failed to implement necessary protective measures and support strategies to prevent ongoing exploitation of vulnerable youths.

It is important to note that the allegations presented in the lawsuit have not been legally proven. CBC News reached out to the involved parties for comments but received no responses at the time of reporting.
