According to analyst Michael Kovrig, U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping was more about ceremonial gestures than substantive policy discussions.
During Xi’s three-day visit to the U.S., Trump hosted him at the White House, with both leaders expressing positivity about the outcome of their talks.
However, Kovrig, a former Canadian diplomat and senior Asia advisor, criticized the lack of tangible results from the summit, suggesting that Trump’s close rapport with Xi could be detrimental to U.S. and Canadian interests.
Notably, this week marks the fifth anniversary of Kovrig’s release from detention in China, a move widely seen as retaliatory for Canada’s involvement in the arrest of a Chinese tech executive in 2018.
In an interview, Kovrig highlighted the symbolic nature of the summit, emphasizing the personal dynamics between Trump and Xi over substantive achievements.
