Kenney passionately argued for Alberta to assert more power and influence within Canada instead of pursuing independence. He emphasized the benefits of remaining part of the Canadian market and maintaining free trade access, cautioning against the economic risks of separation. Kenney highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen Alberta’s position within the federation, citing initiatives such as discussions on a provincial pension and police force.
Wilson, on the other hand, advocated for Alberta’s independence, criticizing Canada as a failed experiment that is too large and diverse to govern effectively. He argued that Alberta’s significant oil reserves and proximity to the U.S. would allow the province to thrive economically on its own. Wilson expressed skepticism about the possibility of reconciling the disconnect between Alberta and central Canada within the current constitutional framework.
The debate resonated differently with attendees. While some, like Cynthia Williams, found Kenney’s arguments grounded in facts and reality, others, like Matt Campbell, remained unconvinced by the federalist perspective. The contrasting viewpoints reflected the broader division within Alberta on whether to pursue a binding referendum on separation from Canada.
The upcoming provincial vote on October 19 will determine whether Alberta moves forward with a referendum on its future within the federation.
