“Indonesia Ferry Tragedy: Death Toll at 9, 126 Missing”

Rescue teams operating in Indonesia have recovered three bodies from a ferry that capsized, with the death toll now at nine and 126 individuals still unaccounted for. Divers managed to retrieve the bodies from the Virgo Transport 8 vessel after it sank due to adverse weather conditions last Sunday. Despite the challenges faced by the divers among the 1,100 personnel involved in the operation, progress has been slow, causing distress to families awaiting news.

The ferry, which was on a voyage from Surabaya to Banjarmasin, capsized around 800 kilometers northeast of Jakarta. The current search and rescue mission is focusing on the possibility of survivors being trapped in sealed compartments inside the ship. Diving conditions have improved, allowing navy divers to approach and enter the vessel.

Strong winds and high waves have hindered the rescue efforts, with the ship drifting about 1.8 nautical miles before sinking to the seabed in the Java Sea, which is approximately 40 to 50 meters deep. The unique design of the Virgo Transport 8, with high hulls rather than windows on the sides, has added complexity to the rescue operation.

As the salvage operation to right the ship begins, divers are facing challenges navigating flooded compartments with limited visibility. The presence of potential air pockets in sealed areas poses a significant risk to both divers and any potential survivors. Despite waning hopes of finding more survivors, the search will continue for at least a week, emphasizing the importance of every human life at stake.
