The Bayeux Tapestry has made its way to the United Kingdom after nearly a millennium, in preparation for a highly anticipated exhibition at the British Museum. The 70-meter-long artwork, illustrating the 1066 Norman Conquest of England, was carefully transported from France in a specialized crate under the watchful eye of French authorities. Upon reaching the Eurotunnel, it was handed over to British officials for the final leg of its journey to London.
Accompanied by a police escort, the truck carrying the tapestry arrived at the museum, where workers cautiously unloaded the crate, resembling the size of a small car. The arrival of this medieval masterpiece, believed to have been crafted by English embroiderers, has already resulted in record-breaking ticket sales of around $4.7 million, making it the museum’s most successful exhibition to date.
British Museum director Nicholas Cullinan likened the demand for tickets to that of securing entry to the renowned Glastonbury music festival. The artwork, stitched with wool thread on linen fabric, chronicles the events leading up to the Battle of Hastings in 1066, a significant historical event that altered the course of English monarchy.
Historians speculate that the tapestry was commissioned by Bishop Odo of Bayeux and created by English women, possibly nuns, before being transported to France. The tapestry’s relocation to London has been shrouded in secrecy due to security concerns, adding to the excitement surrounding its unveiling in the British capital.
Ahead of the exhibition opening on September 10, the tapestry will undergo thorough condition checks and be displayed in a specially designed showcase. The decision to loan the artwork was confirmed by France during President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to the UK, emphasizing the enduring friendship between the two nations amidst the uncertainties following the UK’s Brexit referendum in 2016.
