Jeremy Hansen’s groundbreaking expedition on the Artemis II mission is the focus of an upcoming book scheduled for release this autumn. Titled “Earthrise: A Canadian Astronaut’s Journey into Deep Space,” the book will recount Hansen’s experiences as the first Canadian to venture into deep space. The author of the book is John Larsen, a former high-ranking military public affairs official.
During the Artemis II mission, the crew, which included Hansen along with NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, set a new record for the farthest distance traveled from Earth by humans. This mission, the first crewed lunar expedition in over five decades, garnered significant attention and acclaim from Canadians.
Although the crew did not touch down on the lunar surface, Hansen made history as the initial Canadian and non-American to journey to the moon. The astronauts conducted various tests during the 10-day mission, examining systems such as communications via NASA’s Deep Space Network and studying the effects of space travel on the human body.
The book “Earthrise” will provide readers with an intimate look into Hansen’s extensive training, the realization of his lifelong ambition to become an astronaut, and the lunar mission that propelled him into deep space. Hansen, expressing his excitement, stated that this journey exceeded even his childhood fantasies of space exploration.
Earlier this year, Hansen declared his retirement from the Canadian Space Agency after serving 17 years as an astronaut and 32 years in the military. The author, Larsen, a writer and university lecturer based in Calgary, conducted thorough interviews with Hansen to craft the book. Larsen described the book as a tale of individual triumph, national pride, and the pursuit of personal aspirations.
“Earthrise: A Canadian Astronaut’s Journey into Deep Space” is set to be published by HarperCollinsCanada on October 27, 2026.
