“Governor General Mary Simon Offers Support to Tumbler Ridge After Tragic Shooting”

Governor General Mary Simon made a visit to Tumbler Ridge in northeastern B.C. on Monday to offer support to the community still reeling from a tragic mass shooting on Feb. 10 that claimed the lives of eight individuals. This visit marked her second time in the Peace Region, following her attendance at a community vigil post the incident. Simon expressed her solidarity with the community, emphasizing that Canadians nationwide are keeping Tumbler Ridge in their thoughts and hearts.

During her visit, accompanied by Tumbler Ridge Mayor Darryl Krakowka, the Governor General paid respects at a memorial for the victims, where she placed a paper heart with a heartfelt message. She acknowledged the town’s prevailing somber atmosphere but highlighted the unity and care being extended among residents to support each other through this tough time.

Simon is scheduled to meet with students at the temporary location of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, discussing topics of reconciliation and resilience. She emphasized the importance of mental health support in rural areas, aiming to empower local individuals to become counselors and frontline workers within their communities. Simon also praised the outpouring of support from Canadians as an act of reconciliation, fostering a sense of togetherness and understanding in the aftermath of the tragedy.
