“GM to Invest $691M in St. Catharines Plant for V-8 Engines”

General Motors is set to invest $691 million in its St. Catharines Propulsion Plant to facilitate the production of its latest V-8 engines for full-sized trucks and SUVs. This move will establish St. Catharines as the third facility to manufacture the sixth generation of the engine, alongside Buffalo, N.Y., and Flint, Mich.

The decision to make this investment comes amid concerns within Canada’s automotive sector due to tariffs imposed by the U.S. government. Jack Uppal, president of GM Canada, emphasized in a press release that this investment solidifies St. Catharines’ importance in one of its key vehicle programs for the foreseeable future.

GM has also been directing investments towards its Oshawa plant, known for producing pickup trucks. However, the company recently reduced the plant’s operations from three shifts to two by the end of January. Meanwhile, GM’s CAMI assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ont., ceased production of its electric delivery van last year, leaving the facility inactive.

Trevor Longpre, the Unifor Local 199 plant chair for the GM powertrain plant, expressed optimism about the investment, viewing it as a significant show of confidence in the plant and its workforce following a turbulent period in the automotive industry. Longpre highlighted that the investment underscores the plant’s ability to deliver high-quality products for their most sought-after and top-selling vehicles, indicating a positive outlook.

He mentioned that while the exact impact on the current workforce, which consists of nearly 500 active workers with approximately 150 on layoff, remains uncertain, the news is a welcome development. Longpre acknowledged the challenges faced by the auto industry, especially in light of tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, making this investment a beacon of positive news for the community and the workforce.
