In a heartwarming rescue story, the Humane Society of North Texas faced a challenging situation when a frightened kitten named Elmer was discovered covered in industrial-strength glue near an industrial site in Fort Worth, Texas. Misty Mendes, the shelter’s director of shelter medicine, recounted the initial shock of finding Elmer overwhelmed by the adhesive substance on his head, ears, mouth, and body.
The race against time began as the staff worked tirelessly to remove the glue before it solidified, potentially obstructing Elmer’s breathing. Despite the daunting task, the team’s dedication paid off, and Elmer was eventually freed from the sticky predicament. Named after the glue brand, Elmer now thrives in his new loving home.
The unique challenge presented by Elmer’s situation prompted the shelter staff to experiment with various solutions to remove the glue. From dish soap to mineral oil and bandage removal spray, nothing seemed effective until they tried canola oil, which proved successful in the end.
Following an intensive care regimen that included massages with oil, warm baths, and syringe feeding, Elmer slowly regained his strength. Staff members provided round-the-clock attention, with one team member even taking Elmer home overnight to continue his treatment.
Leah Owens, a compassionate volunteer who read about Elmer’s story in the newspaper, stepped in to foster him temporarily. However, the bond between them grew quickly, leading Owens to decide to adopt Elmer permanently. The kitten brought joy and companionship to Owens, who had been grappling with feelings of emptiness after her husband’s passing.
Despite the unexpected fame Elmer garnered, Owens uses the spotlight to advocate for fostering animals and promoting adoption from shelters. She emphasizes the importance of supporting shelters in need of fosters and encourages people to adopt pets in need rather than buying from breeders.
Elmer, now comfortably settled in his new home, displays a resilient and playful spirit, showing no signs of trauma from his past ordeal. Owens describes him as fearless, affectionate, and mischievous—a delightful addition to her household.
