K-pop sensation BTS has decided not to enter their music for consideration at the upcoming Grammy Awards. The group, comprised of RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook, made the announcement via a collective statement on Instagram, expressing their desire for their music to be appreciated without boundaries of region or language. This decision follows the introduction of a new Grammy category honoring Asian pop music performances, which specifically highlights works featuring Asian languages.
Although BTS has garnered five Grammy nominations and performed at the ceremony multiple times, they have yet to secure a win. The group’s latest album, “Arirang,” predominantly features English lyrics, potentially influencing their choice not to submit for the awards. Despite this, BTS fans, known as the ARMY, have shown unwavering support for the group’s decision.
The Recording Academy’s CEO, Harvey Mason Jr., expressed disappointment at BTS’s non-participation but acknowledged and respected their stance. He emphasized that the Asian Pop category was established to celebrate Asian music excellence and aims to enhance inclusivity within the Grammy platform.
BTS joins a growing list of artists, including Frank Ocean and The Weeknd, who have either criticized the Grammys or refrained from submitting their music for Grammy consideration. The group’s recent achievements, such as their chart-topping album “Arirang” and hit single “Swim,” further solidify their global success.
While the Recording Academy continues to evolve, industry experts note that some artists, like BTS, may opt out of specific categories to avoid categorization. BTS, fresh from their FIFA World Cup halftime performance, is embarking on their Arirang world tour, with a scheduled stop at Toronto’s Rogers Stadium in August.
