Fresh Ebola Outbreak Confirmed in Congo’s Ituri Province

Africa’s leading public health organization has officially verified a fresh Ebola outbreak in the remote Ituri province of Congo. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention disclosed that there have been 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths reported thus far, primarily concentrated in the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones. Furthermore, Uganda’s health ministry confirmed a case related to the Bundibugyo strain after a Congolese man passed away in Kampala.

The Ebola virus is highly contagious and can be transmitted through bodily fluids like blood, vomit, or semen, leading to a severe and often fatal disease. The Bundibugyo strain, identified in 2007, results in death in around 30% of cases. The specific strain circulating in Congo is currently undetermined.

The Africa CDC stated that laboratory results have detected the Ebola virus in 13 out of 20 samples, indicating a variant distinct from the Ebola Zaire strain. The World Health Organization mentioned that Congo possesses treatments and approximately 2,000 doses of the Ervebo Ebola vaccine effective against the Ebola Zaire strain only.

The Africa CDC anticipates confirming the strain in the new outbreak within 24 hours. Meanwhile, an urgent coordination meeting involving health authorities from Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan, along with key partners, is scheduled to address immediate response priorities, cross-border coordination, surveillance, and resource mobilization.

Congo has experienced more than a dozen Ebola outbreaks in the past, with the current one being the 17th since 1976. This outbreak, occurring close to the borders of Uganda and South Sudan, poses a significant risk of further spread due to population movement, mining activities, insecurity, and other challenges.

Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, emphasized the organization’s support for Congo’s response efforts by releasing $500,000 in aid. The history of Ebola outbreaks in Congo, coupled with the ongoing violence in the region, presents additional complexities in managing the current situation.
