Canadiens Crush Hurricanes 6-2 in Game 1 Rout

The Montreal Canadiens took advantage of a slow start by the Carolina Hurricanes, who were returning from an extended playoff break, and secured a convincing 6-2 victory in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference final. Scoring four goals in the first period, Cole Caufield, Phillip Danault, Alexandre Texier, and Ivan Demidov put Montreal in a commanding 4-1 lead against the top-seeded Hurricanes, who had not allowed more than two goals in their previous eight playoff games.

Juraj Slafkovsky added two more goals for the Canadiens in the third period, sealing the win with an empty-netter. Goalie Jakub Dobeš made 24 saves in the game. The Hurricanes, who had swept their first two playoff rounds, faced an 11-day break before this series, the longest rest period for any team since 1920.

Despite an early goal by Seth Jarvis for Carolina, the Canadiens effectively countered the Hurricanes’ offensive pressure, creating scoring opportunities and capitalizing on breakaways. Montreal’s crisp puck movement and strong offensive play disrupted Carolina’s usual defensive strategy, leading to a dominant performance.

While the Hurricanes managed to score through Eric Robinson, their record in conference final games dropped to 1-13, including previous sweeps in 2019 and 2023. With both Stanley Cup favorites losing their conference final openers, the series promises to be fiercely competitive. Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday night.
