“Brilliant Fireball Lights Up Night Sky Over Victoria”

A brilliant fireball illuminated the night sky above Victoria, located on Vancouver Island, during Tuesday evening. The American Meteor Society gathered more than 100 reports concerning the fireball sighting, reaching as far south as Oregon.

Michael Unger, the director of programming at Vancouver’s H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, analyzed the footage and confirmed that it depicted a meteor. Describing the event, he stated, “It clearly indicates that a fireball swiftly descended and disintegrated, leaving a dazzling light trail across the sky.” This information was shared with Stephen Quinn, the host of CBC’s program, “The Early Edition.”

Unger compared the recent meteor sighting on Tuesday to a similar occurrence in early March, where a meteor traversed across B.C., generating a loud boom audible in various communities. He emphasized the allure of meteors and fireballs, noting that they represent “literally an alien rock approaching us,” attracting people’s curiosity towards the unknown.

In light-polluted urban areas where stargazing is limited, the sudden appearance of a bright flash streaking across the sky ignites excitement and a sense of connection with the night sky, according to Unger. CBC News has contacted NASA to inquire about potential recordings of the fireball and its flight path.
