Parts of British Columbia are facing severe drought conditions this summer. In Bessette Creek, water restrictions have been imposed to protect salmon populations due to extremely low water levels. Temporary protection orders for the Salmon River watershed were initially issued in July, lifted briefly in early August due to wildfire concerns, and then reinstated at the end of August.
Bob Crandall, treasurer of the Cowichan Lake Salmonid Enhancement Society, noted the increasing dryness of the 16 streams connected to Lake Cowichan they oversee. The society conducts fry salvage operations, rescuing fish from drying rivers and relocating them to other water bodies to mitigate the effects of dwindling water sources.
Crandall emphasized the importance of human intervention in addressing ecosystem challenges caused by man-made impacts. While communities are supportive of these efforts, scientists caution that such interventions may not offer sustainable long-term solutions.
Collaborating with the Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation and volunteers, Crandall and his team focus on relocating various fish species, including salmon, trout, and char, to areas with more water. However, climate change is making this task increasingly challenging. Dry streams are now receding further upstream, requiring more extensive efforts to rescue and relocate fish.
The process involves using aerators and nets to ensure fish survival during transportation. Crandall, born in a trout hatchery, stresses the importance of maintaining fish populations within the ecosystem. The Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation plays a vital role in these efforts, utilizing drones to monitor drying streams and actively participating in the relocation process.
Michelle Corfield, representing the Nation, highlighted the cultural significance of salmon and the community’s commitment to conservation efforts. She emphasized a holistic approach to salmon conservation, including river restoration and ocean conditions, to ensure their sustainability for future generations.
In other regions like France, similar rescue operations are facing challenges due to severe drought and extreme heat. Jean-Pierre Faure from the Fédération de Pêche du Rhône stated that traditional fish relocation methods are no longer effective, given unprecedented weather events and rising water temperatures. Faure emphasized the need for ecosystem restoration and adaptive water management strategies over short-term rescue initiatives, citing the limitations and high costs associated with fish relocation efforts.
