Apu Nahasapeemapetilon made a comeback on the latest episode of The Simpsons, titled “Treehouse of Horror Presents: The Revengening,” marking his first speaking appearance since 2017. Despite being present in the background in recent years, Apu had not spoken due to concerns about perpetuating racial stereotypes.
The character is now voiced by Sunil Malhotra, an Indian-American actor known for his work in The Legend of Korra, taking over from Hank Azaria, a white actor who had voiced Apu for 27 years. In 2021, Azaria publicly apologized for his contribution to the character, expressing regret and a sense of responsibility.
Apu’s return was kept under wraps until the episode aired, where he emerges as a significant figure, declaring, “I am Apu.” The show’s producers have indicated that Apu and his family will have a more prominent presence moving forward, emphasizing a desire to evolve the character in a manner consistent with the show’s style.
The decision to recast Apu and other characters of color with actors of color aligns with a broader shift in the industry towards more authentic representation. The show’s commitment to inclusivity has seen other roles recast, with characters like Carl Carlson and Dr. Julius Hibbert now voiced by actors of color.
Reactions to Apu’s return have been mixed, with some fans welcoming the character’s comeback while others expressing nostalgia for the previous voice actor, Hank Azaria. Indian-American comedian Rajiv Satyal viewed Apu’s return as a significant cultural moment and emphasized the importance of providing opportunities for actors from diverse communities.
Overall, the reintroduction of Apu with a new voice actor reflects a broader effort within the entertainment industry to address issues of representation and diversity, signaling a shift towards more inclusive casting practices.
