Anthropic announced on Wednesday a collaboration with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to access the computing resources of SpaceX’s Colossus 1 facility in Memphis, Tennessee. This partnership will provide Anthropic, the creator of the Claude chatbot, with an additional 300 megawatts of capacity within a month by leveraging over 220,000 Nvidia processors at the facility.
The deal not only benefits Anthropic by addressing capacity constraints due to increased demand for its AI coding tool, Claude Code, but also serves as a strategic move for SpaceX as it prepares for its upcoming IPO and aims to showcase its AI capabilities to potential investors.
During a developer day event in San Francisco, Anthropic introduced a new feature for its Claude AI system called “dreaming,” designed to enhance learning by analyzing work patterns between sessions and updating user preferences and context data. With the added capacity from the SpaceX agreement and other recent partnerships, Anthropic has decided to double the rate limits for Claude Code’s paid plans and remove peak-hour usage caps for Pro and Max accounts, in addition to increasing the volume of requests developers can make to its Claude Opus models.
Looking ahead, Anthropic expressed interest in collaborating with SpaceX to develop space-based orbital data centers, aligning with Musk’s vision and SpaceX’s IPO plans. Ryan Mallory, CEO of Flexential, a data center operator, highlighted the growing demand for power and scale in the market, emphasizing the significance of exploring compute capacity in space.
In a surprising turn of events, Musk, who had previously criticized Anthropic’s AI, announced a change in stance after meeting with Anthropic leaders. Musk praised the efforts of Anthropic in ensuring that their AI technology benefits humanity, contrasting his ongoing legal dispute with OpenAI and its CEO, Sam Altman, over similar concerns.
Anthropic’s push to attract enterprise customers was reinforced by the unveiling of the “dreaming” feature, aimed at enhancing agent management software and appealing to businesses. This move follows a surge in interest for Claude Code, intensifying competition in the AI-powered coding market and prompting adjustments by competitors like OpenAI.
At the San Francisco event, Boris Cherny, Anthropic’s head of Claude Code, demonstrated how developers can optimize Anthropic’s AI capabilities through scheduled actions, emphasizing the productivity potential of AI technology. Cherny highlighted the existing capabilities of AI and emphasized the importance of swiftly leveraging them for practical applications.
