Brenda Fricker, known for her roles as the “Pigeon Lady” in the movie “Home Alone 2” and as the first Irish actress to win an Oscar for her performance in “My Left Foot,” has passed away at the age of 81.

The esteemed character actor, who starred in nearly 100 films and TV shows over a span of six decades, died in Dublin following a period of declining health, as confirmed by her agent, Phil Belfield.

Born in Dublin in 1945, Fricker kickstarted her acting career in her late teens, showcasing her talent in a diverse range of projects from Irish and British television series like ITV’s “Coronation Street” to various movies such as “So I Married an Axe Murderer” and “Veronica Guerin.”

Her versatility extended to the stage where she graced audiences with her performances in both classic and contemporary productions at renowned theaters including the Abbey Theatre in Dublin and the Royal National Theatre in London.

Fricker’s standout role in the biographical drama “My Left Foot” earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1990, alongside Daniel Day-Lewis who won Best Actor. The film’s success not only garnered critical acclaim but also helped boost the Irish film industry.

In addition to her memorable performances in Hollywood films like “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York,” Fricker also made a mark as an author with her bestselling memoir “She Died Young: A Life in Fragments,” where she shared her life experiences including both joyful moments and personal challenges.

Recognized for her contributions to the entertainment industry, Fricker was honored by her hometown of Dublin with the prestigious Freedom of the City award. Tributes poured in following her passing, with Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister, Simon Harris, describing her as a national treasure and a true ambassador of Irish talent.
