A tragic incident occurred at Kruger National Park in South Africa where a Canadian tourist was accidentally shot and killed by a park guide. The South African National Parks (SANParks) confirmed the death of a 69-year-old Canadian visitor due to an unintentional firearm discharge by the guide. The incident took place in the evening on Wednesday, local time.
According to the South African Police Service, the Canadian tourist approached the guide and inquired about the authenticity of the firearm. The situation escalated when the guide, while demonstrating the rifle’s authenticity, unintentionally fired the weapon, fatally injuring the tourist in the upper body. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, prompting the authorities to launch an investigation into potential charges of culpable homicide and irresponsible firearm handling.
Global Affairs Canada expressed condolences and stated that consular officials are assisting in the matter. The deceased Canadian, who was part of a group invited to a bush braai event in the park, has not been publicly identified. SANParks spokesperson JP Louw extended sympathies to the family and friends of the deceased during this challenging period.
