A man from Calgary who caused severe injuries to his ex-girlfriend by attacking her with a sword and cutting off three of her fingers has been subjected to 30 court-ordered conditions to safeguard the public post his prison term. Collin Dennis Ayorech, aged 45, agreed to adhere to an 18-month peace bond on Monday, a measure typically reserved for high-risk offenders to aid in their community reintegration after serving their sentence.
Following the expiration of his sentence, Ayorech’s peace bond entails various restrictions, including wearing an ankle monitor managed by the CPS high-risk offender unit, maintaining no contact with the victim, abiding by a curfew, attending addiction counseling, undergoing random drug tests, and complying with police supervision and searches.
Justice Harry Van Harten expressed satisfaction with Ayorech’s acceptance of the conditions, emphasizing their stringent nature but highlighting the hope for his successful reintegration. Ayorech had previously received an eight-year sentence in August 2020 for the assault on Dawn Warden, his former partner, with approximately five-and-a-half years remaining following credit for time served. He completed the remainder of his term before being released in February.
Ayorech’s release prompted a public safety warning by CPS due to his history of substance abuse and schizophrenia diagnosis. The incident involving the attack on Warden occurred in June 2019 during a dispute in her bedroom, where Ayorech inflicted multiple injuries on her before setting a mattress on fire and confining her to a closet. Warden’s son, present during the ordeal, alerted neighbors and emergency services, resulting in Warden being rescued from the burning room. She underwent several surgeries post the traumatic event.
Prosecutor Karuna Ramakrishnan highlighted Warden’s disability resulting from Ayorech’s actions while reviewing his imposed conditions. The peace bond aims to supervise Ayorech’s reentry into society with enhanced community safety measures in place.
