Britney Spears, represented by her attorney, pleaded guilty on Monday to a reduced charge in a Southern California court to avoid jail time. The pop star, aged 44, was accused of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs but did not appear in court. Instead, her lawyer, Michael A. Goldstein, agreed to a “wet reckless” plea deal on her behalf. This agreement entails a year of probation, mandatory DUI classes, and fines mandated by the state.
The district attorney’s office of Ventura County stated that this plea deal is customary for offenders with a clean DUI record, no road incidents, and a low blood alcohol level. It is especially common for individuals who have taken steps to address their issues, like Spears, who voluntarily entered a substance abuse treatment facility in April.
Goldstein expressed that while no one is pleased about pleading guilty, it was necessary to put this matter behind them. He appreciated the district attorney’s acknowledgment of Britney’s efforts to better herself. Goldstein clarified that contrary to reports, Spears completed her rehab program and did not leave prematurely. When asked about her future plans, Goldstein responded, “I don’t know, probably a lot.”
During the hearing, Spears received informal probation, exempt from mandatory meetings with a parole officer. She also agreed to yield her Fourth Amendment rights during traffic stops, allowing searches and sobriety tests. However, this provision does not extend to her residence, as confirmed by the judge.
District Attorney Erik Nasarenko stressed that Spears accepted responsibility for her actions, emphasizing the seriousness of DUI offenses. He highlighted the importance of Spears adhering to the court-mandated requirements, including ongoing substance abuse treatment, regular therapy sessions, and monthly psychiatric visits.
Britney Spears was charged with a misdemeanor DUI count last week, which did not necessitate her presence in court. The incident drew significant media attention to Ventura, where she resides. Following her arrest on March 4 for erratic driving, Spears’ representatives acknowledged her actions were unacceptable and hoped for positive changes in her life. Spears has not publicly commented since the charges were filed.
The California Highway Patrol reported that Spears was stopped for erratic driving on U.S. 101, where she displayed signs of impairment and failed sobriety tests, leading to her arrest. Authorities confirmed the presence of alcohol and drugs in her system but did not specify the substances or her blood alcohol level.
