Amnesty International has raised concerns about Israel’s rapid expansion of annexation measures in the occupied West Bank, characterizing it as a form of “ethnic cleansing” targeting Palestinians with the goal of territorial annexation. The human rights organization’s recent report accused the Israeli government of orchestrating a state-sponsored campaign leading to the forced displacement of Palestinians in the West Bank.
According to Amnesty International Secretary General Agnès Callamard, the report reveals that these actions are not isolated incidents but rather integral to a systematic campaign of ethnic cleansing supported by the state, which perpetuates Israel’s apartheid system. The organization emphasized that the ongoing annexation violates international law and called for global attention to these developments.
Last week, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced a significant expansion of three Jewish settlements by over 2,000 homes, despite international criticism of such actions. Israel has consistently rejected accusations of ethnic cleansing, dismissing them as biased. The government has yet to respond to Amnesty International’s report.
The displacement of Palestinians is often driven by settlers who construct illegal outposts on Palestinian land, a process facilitated by the government’s actions. Amnesty International noted that this unlawful displacement would not be viable without governmental support and complicity.
The international community, including human rights groups and foreign ministers, has condemned the escalating settler violence in the occupied territory, particularly in East Jerusalem. United Nations experts have labeled these actions as contributing to the “ethnic cleansing” of Palestinians through forced expulsions and violence.
The UN report highlighted that more than 100 West Bank villages have been either partially or fully evacuated between January 2023 and April 2026. Over 7,280 instances of Palestinian displacement due to home demolitions by Israeli forces have been documented during the same period. Palestinian communities in Area C, under full Israeli control, are disproportionately affected by these actions.
Peace Now, an Israeli organization monitoring settlement expansion, reported a significant increase in outposts and settlements since 2023. The ongoing displacement of Palestinians has raised concerns about the disappearance of their communities, prompting calls for accountability and action from the international community.
Amnesty International’s comprehensive report investigated numerous instances of displacement in the West Bank and highlighted the systemic nature of settler violence as part of Israeli state policy. The organization urged global pressure on Israeli authorities to dismantle settlements, allow displaced Palestinians to return home, and prevent further annexation of the West Bank.
