Aung San Suu Kyi Transferred to House Arrest

Myanmar’s former leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been detained since the military seized power on February 1, 2021, has been transferred from prison to house arrest, as reported by state television on Thursday night. The announcement was also communicated to journalists by the government’s Military Information Team through a brief text message.

In the photo accompanying the news, Suu Kyi, aged 80, is depicted sitting on a wooden bench in a skirt and traditional white blouse. She is seated behind a low table, facing two unidentified men, one in a police uniform and the other in a different uniform.

Suu Kyi’s last public appearance was on May 24, 2021, in court. Following her detention, she was initially sentenced to 33 years in prison in late 2022 on multiple charges deemed by her supporters and human rights organizations as efforts to undermine her and justify the military’s takeover that ousted her from power, as well as to prevent her reentry into politics.

The message announcing her relocation stated that she was moved from the main prison in Naypyitaw, Myanmar’s capital, to house arrest. This action was described as a gesture to mark Buddha Day, demonstrate humanitarian concern, and showcase the state’s kindness. While the exact location was not disclosed, it was mentioned that she would serve the remainder of her sentence at a designated residence instead of in prison.
