Shia LaBeouf sentenced to probation for assaulting three people

Actor Shia LaBeouf received probation as part of his sentence after admitting to assaulting three individuals outside a bar in New Orleans during Mardi Gras. LaBeouf was also mandated to participate in an alcohol treatment program, according to his attorney, Sarah Chervinsky. The incident occurred near the French Quarter, leading to LaBeouf’s arrest and subsequent release on bail.

Video evidence from the altercation on February 17 captured LaBeouf, shirtless, pushing one person to the ground and striking another individual in the face, potentially causing a dislocated nose, as per a report by the New Orleans police. Furthermore, LaBeouf was reported to have used homophobic slurs during the incident and at the time of his arrest.

Pleading guilty to three counts of simple battery, LaBeouf was handed a six-month suspended sentence and two years of probation by Orleans Parish Judge Juana Marine-Lombard. Additionally, he was ordered to maintain distance from both the victims and the bar. Chervinsky emphasized that LaBeouf aimed to take responsibility for his actions, characterizing the event as a minor scuffle at a Mardi Gras bar, devoid of bias or prejudice.

Orleans Parish district attorney Jason Williams confirmed that the victims supported the plea deal offered to LaBeouf after consultation. One of the individuals assaulted, identified as Jeffrey Damnit (Jeffrey Klein), recounted being attacked by LaBeouf, who allegedly made threats and used derogatory language earlier in the night. Damnit’s legal representative expressed hope that LaBeouf’s conduct would improve post-rehabilitation.

In a separate incident in February, LaBeouf was directed to undergo drug and alcohol rehabilitation. In an interview following the incident, he contested having a drinking issue and questioned the efficacy of rehabilitation, attributing his behavior to anger and ego rather than alcohol. LaBeouf also made controversial remarks about his discomfort around gay individuals during the interview.

Known for his roles in films like “Transformers” and “Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull,” LaBeouf has faced legal troubles over the years. These include arrests for assault and public drunkenness, with various altercations leading to probation and legal disputes, such as the lawsuit filed against him by singer FKA Twigs, which they settled in 2020. LaBeouf rose to fame as a child actor on the Disney Channel series “Even Stevens.”
