“Hazardous Chemical Threatens Explosion at CA Aerospace Facility”

A critical situation is unfolding at an aerospace facility in southern California as a storage tank containing a hazardous chemical is at risk of exploding. The tank, holding a significant amount of methyl methacrylate, experienced overheating and started releasing vapors into the atmosphere at an aerospace plastics plant in Garden Grove, Orange County.

Methyl methacrylate is a chemical used in the production of resins and plastics, known for its high flammability. Dr. Regina Chinsio-Kwong, the health officer of Orange County, emphasized that the chemical, typically a clear liquid, can emit harmful vapors when heated, posing risks to human health.

Exposure to methyl methacrylate vapors can lead to various health issues, ranging from skin and eye irritation to more severe respiratory and neurological complications. Symptoms may include chest tightness, shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, headaches, lethargy, and lightheadedness. While long-term exposure has been associated with cardiovascular problems, the EPA states that there is no conclusive evidence linking the chemical to cancer in humans.

Efforts are ongoing to cool down the tank to prevent potential leaks or explosions, with emergency crews working tirelessly. The situation has prompted evacuation orders for a significant number of residents in southern California.
