“PM Mark Carney Urges Action on Dilapidated 24 Sussex Residence”

Prime Minister Mark Carney has expressed his concern over the dilapidated state of the official residence at 24 Sussex Drive, calling it “an embarrassment.” Carney emphasized the importance of making a decision regarding the future of the historic home, which has been unoccupied since 2015 due to extensive disrepair.

The National Capital Commission, responsible for overseeing Ottawa’s official residences, officially closed 24 Sussex in 2022 after a thorough cleanup to remove hazardous materials and pests. Despite the urgent need for renovation, past prime ministers have hesitated to invest public funds into the costly restoration or consider constructing a new official residence.

Carney highlighted the need to leave a positive legacy by ensuring that future prime ministers have a suitable abode for conducting official duties. Given the current state of 24 Sussex, Carney stressed the necessity for action to address the deteriorating condition of the residence. In the absence of 24 Sussex, both Carney and former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau have resided at Rideau Cottage, although concerns have been raised about its adequacy and security risks according to a government memorandum.

Trudeau’s effort to address the housing dilemma involved proposing three options for replacing 24 Sussex, including renovating the existing property, relocating to a more secure location in Rockcliffe Park, or upgrading Rideau Cottage. However, the substantial costs associated with these alternatives remain a significant consideration, with estimates ranging from tens of millions to over $100 million.

The fate of 24 Sussex remains uncertain, with a potential decision expected in the near future. Carney emphasized the importance of providing future prime ministers with a suitable residence to fulfill their official responsibilities, hosting foreign dignitaries, and engaging with the Canadian public.
