“Canada’s PM Optimistic on Swift Resolution of U.S. Tariff Dispute”

Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada has expressed optimism that the ongoing tariff dispute with the U.S. could be resolved swiftly, possibly within a matter of days if the U.S. demonstrates the willingness and capacity to engage in negotiations. The U.S. has imposed substantial import tariffs on various Canadian products, including steel, aluminum, copper, automotive parts, lumber, and wood items.

Carney stated in an interview with CBC News that Canada is prepared to engage in discussions to lift some of these tariffs but emphasized the importance of achieving a substantial agreement rather than settling for a quick, limited deal. He highlighted the need for active participation from the U.S. side to facilitate a positive outcome.

The Prime Minister suggested that a comprehensive resolution on tariffs could be achieved promptly if there is a concerted effort from both parties involved in the negotiations. Carney noted that some countries that hastily reached agreements with the U.S. in the past were dissatisfied with the terms, cautioning against rushing into deals that may not be beneficial.

Regarding his interactions with President Trump, Carney described their communication as intermittent but direct, emphasizing the importance of clarity and honesty in their discussions. He mentioned that Trump values strength and straightforwardness in dealings, urging against insincerity or ambiguity.

Carney also shared insights into his previous discussions with Trump, revealing that the President had sought his advice on matters related to Iran during their initial meeting in the U.S. a year ago. The Prime Minister did not disclose the details of the advice he provided but highlighted that the White House did not consult with Canada before recent hostilities in the Middle East.

In response to the conflict in Iran, Carney mentioned that Canada is exploring ways to assist in reopening the crucial Strait of Hormuz but stressed the necessity of a sustainable ceasefire before taking any action. He expressed Canada’s willingness to support allies in demining operations in the region once a lasting peace agreement is in place.

Carney’s insights shed light on the ongoing trade negotiations and geopolitical dynamics between Canada and the U.S., underscoring the importance of strategic and principled engagement in resolving disputes and promoting international cooperation.
